Inherited from the Cluny monks who had cleared the land and planted vines on their properties around Mâcon, the House of Mommessin has its origins in southern Burgundy. In 1865, Jean-Marie Mommessin chose to set up his company at Grange-Saint-Pierre, one of the former outbuildings of the Cluny Abbey. It was from there that the key, which has become the symbol of the brand, was taken. The purchase of the famous Clos de Tart vineyard in 1932 took the company to the very heart of Burgundy before its headquarters was finally transferred to Quincié-en-Beaujolais, after having been based in the Mâconnais region for over a century.
Mommessin’s wines derive their unique character from their dual lineage, an alliance of the typically Burgundian quest for excellence and the bursting flavours that characterize Beaujolais wines. From now on, Mommessin’s history and quest for the treasures of the terroir will unfold amid the green hills of the Beaujolais region. The Château de Pierreux, which now houses the headquarters of Mommessin amid 100 hectares of land, seventy seven of which are planted with Brouilly vines, is one of the region’s most beautiful estates. Steeped in several centuries of history and set at the heart of a landscape that expresses the soul of the Beaujolais region in all its glory, the château embodies the spirit of the Beaujolais at its noblest and carries the image of a great estate.
